Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure used to make the teeth longer. Patients who have short teeth may opt for this treatment to improve the esthetics of their smile, while in other cases, the restorative dentist may require more tooth exposed in order to properly restore a tooth and may refer you to Dr. Matheson to have this done.

RESTORATIVE Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess and diseased gum and bone tissue around one or more of your teeth, exposing additional tooth structure above your gumline. This may be recommended if your dentist is having difficulty reaching all the decay on your tooth or having trouble creating a healthy restoration on your tooth.

During this treatment, any excess gum tissue is removed and your gums are moved away from your tooth slightly. The bone around the teeth will be smoothed / altered and the gum tissues are placed a little lower around the teeth. With more tooth structure showing above the gumline, your dentist is able to properly remove all the decay in the tooth and place a restoration that will be healthy and long lasting.

ESTHETIC CROWN LENGTHENING

If you have a gummy smile or short looking teeth, you may be a candidate for Esthetic Crown Lengthening! Excess gum tissue is removed as well as any excess bone tissue around the teeth with the end result revealing more of the tooth structure. Crown lengthening can be performed on a single tooth, multiple teeth or the entire gum line, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing and balanced smile.
